About family training

The intercultural family training model developed by the Duo Project in 2008-2010 was extended to cover expecting couples as well as families with small children. Duo's family training covers themes such as intercultural parenthood and relationship as well as children's bilingualism and identity.

Duo partners with Väestöliitto (Family Federation) to develop internet-based groups for expecting couples and parents of small children. The start of the groups will be announced on this page.

A guide booklet to intercultural parents

"Love and Parenthood in an Intercultural Family" booklet is intended for all intercultural families that are planning to have a child, expecting a baby or that already have small children. Professionals (such as nurses, kindergarten teachers and school teachers) can also benefit from the booklet.

The booklet contains basic information about a couple’s relationship,
parenthood, child’s identity and bilingualism. It:

gives information about the different stages of a relationship
from falling in love to love;
describes life between cultures;
describes how to create a third culture;
gives information about the effects a child’s birth and parenthoodhave on the parents’ life and relationship;
provides tips on how to support an intercultural child’s identity
and bilingualism.

The booklet also contains extracts from the stories of parents
and grown-up children of intercultural families.

Order the booklet

The booklet is will be translated into English, Russian, French and Thai in this spring. In the mean time, if you want to order the booklet in Finnish, or pre-order the booklet in other languages, send us an email to duo@familiaclub.fi. The booklet costs 5 euros (including postage in Finland).
